The point is that if you are in an zip code in which you can receive local channels, and you move within a few miles, you can still receive them if you don't tell them you moved. The dish is NOT capable of transmitting. Like I said, I moved 30 miles east of Dallas just 2 weeks ago and I still have all my channels, including the locals.
The channel info is downloaded over the telephone line, this is where the TV guide comes from. To do that, information from the setup is used.
There are a lot of computer elements built into those receivers, the TIVO's even have a hard drive - that's what stores shows in progress so that they can be replayed, stopped and resumed, and so on.
I also know this: ALL direct tv receivers are preset at the factory to allow $10.oo per day of pay per view. It's a good idea to go into the menues and hunt down the parental controls or locks and limits to switch that to zero and password it. That way its impossible to order a show even by accident unless you have the password.
I live about 20 miles from Memphis. I have to use a seperate dish to get all my local channels.
I live 50 miles south of Memphis(born there) at Batesville MS and I get the local channels out of Memphis on the same dish. Now as for the programming set-up, whenever I unplug the receiver or if the power goes off, the screen shows a message that it's receiving program data. I have only one reciever hooked to a phone line. The installer told me that it was only necessary for buying movies, which we did one time...Meet The ****ers......funny movie.
The movie only showed on that tv which we ordered it from and none of the others.
Anyhow...thanks for the input...I am learning more.
