AOD problem

Hi,
New member here. I have a 91 E 350 with the 7.3 and AOD. I recently had a bad exhaust valve guide in the # 2 hole and had to replace the heads. I noticed before I did the work that the tranny was shifting a little differently than it usually did. Now that the engine is back to running like it should, the shift problem seems to be more pronounced. Some times it shifts hard between first and second and then second and third. It normally shifts soft. Almost like it slides from one gear to the next. But in all cases, when it shifts into OD, it wanders. It won't stay in OD unless you apply more throttle. When it backs off, it goes into a gear that seems to be somewhere between OD and third. Any help?
Thanx

First the AOD is only on E150, I think yours is the E40D check your door post tag for the code letter (E).

You don't have the FIPL adjusted correctly. That is the sensor on the injector pump that tells the trans computer how far you've pressed the pedal.

And yes, it's an E4OD. The AOD doesn't mate to the 7.3L.

Thumbs up

Casey,

Thank you very much. This was a 2 part problem. Seems the FIPL was only slightly out of adjustment, but the big culprit was that the last guy that worked on my van in Oklahoma set the idle too high. I could not get the low end voltage to drop below 1.23 vdc. I adjusted the idle and then adjusted the FIPL voltage and it shifts like a new one! Just one question though....does anyone know who the wise guy was that decided to plug the torx holes in the screws with potting material? My 7.3 is in a van, which working on the engine is about like building a ship in a bottle to begin with and then they pull this crap!!
Anyway, thank you very much for your help!
If I can ever help you, (don't know in what capacity that would be) I'd be happy to.
