Used Explorer questions
Hi folks,
I am looking for a used reliable Explorer.Which year is the best to pick? What kind of engine, transmissions, etc... to choose and which ones to be avoided?

depend what you want...
first gen
raduis arm bushings and bad tranny are there downfall
97 98 wathc the SOHC motors unless they had timing change cassetes fixed
also in the second gen you get a v-8 option but its a AWD
after 96 you had no 2wd control trac or awd

the 00 has the sohc better milage and tons of power

More from a non-technical view let me say owing a 2003 and prior a 2000 XLT. Can't beat the latest generation, 2002 and on - less the transmission issue for some years. Going the other way unless cash is a real issue, why buy the oldest, some over 10 years at this point - not saying good deals on great trucks aren't out there, just 10 years you know.
Last, a lot to be said for a somewhat low milage, lets say 2000 XLT 4WD with the base OHV engine. Not a lot of power, but will probably run forever and simple to repair if it needs it.
Will let all of you take it from here.

I've got a 97 ohv v-6 and an 03 Mountaineer V-8. The 97 is a great truck, a little underpowered but thats ony a problem at freeway speeds. It is quiet and comfortable and very capable in snow (Not so good off road, the clearence is not that great, but you can fix that.)
That being said, the new generation is many times better. The IRS is great and gives it an almost car like ride. The quality of materials used in the interior is much better and there is room for 3 row seating which can accomadate adults in a pinch,I ride back there with the kids sometimes. I guess it comes down to how much you want to spend. I am sure my trade-in value on my 97 is almost $0 and there are plenty of good used ones around for not much cash. But I have also seen some 02 and 03 getting fairly low in price.
