gas

First of all, has anybody else found the gas cap on these things to be annoying, in that it just scrapes against the paint when you have it open. Would've been nice to have a little cap holder thingy on the door lid.

Anyway, what do you guys think of this theory. I've found i'm getting better gas mileage around town if i leave it below a half tank. I've theorized that the extra weight of 15+ gallons of fuel (at full tank) is adding unnecessary weight to the vehicle in stop & go driving. Maybe the extra weight is negligible, and I'm just imaging things.

My beef is that gas filler door is made of PLASTIC! What's wrong with a simple piece of sheetmetal? I guess it costs more :-(

15gallons is a tad over 90lbs if I remember right. Yeah, it takes less gas to move 90 fewer lbs around. But how much gas do you spend making 2 trips to the gas station versus one? :-)

not sure how much the weight of half a tank would matter. maybe your thinking to yourself that your at less than half a tank of gas so your driving a little slower like when your geting off the line which is improving your economy.

My gas filler door has a little "hook" that I use to hang the cap from its strap. Works quite well.

I had the same feelings when I first got my truck, plastic!? nothing to hold the hook!
To expand on theisen's coment, open the door and look at the arm on the door. About 1/2 way around the bend is a small plastic tab (about 1/8 x 1/8 ). when you remove the cap hook the strap on this tab and your problem is solved!!!!

As far as the plastic I just had mine replaced from where the spring broke when I opened it. What quality you get for your 30g's

I'm sure I get better gas mileage, when I fill up from empty, instead of half empty. I've tried it both ways. I just hate waiting for that 36 gallon tank to fill up, and the money I pay.

Mine also has a little hook to hang the gas cap on.

I'll have to look for the hook thingy, nothing like making it obvious. And cutting the plastic tether is just asking for a lost gas cap.

I entertained the idea that i drive more conservatively with under 1/2 tank but it's not true. But seriously, think about how much 15-20 gallons of fuel weighs. Extra 200 lbs. at least, guestimating that one gallon of water weights roughly 10lbs. I'd think gasoline is heavier than water. I could be talking out my a$$ too.

Put a little of both in a clear glass jar and see which is on bottom, (or top for those optimists among us)
