I have a 76 F150 with the round canister steering pump, a steering box out of a 92 F250HD and a D60 and 46x19.5 tires. I put a new pressure hose on it today and it failed while pleeding the air out of the system. This is the first time I have ran this combo and was turning lock to lock while sitting still on dry pavement.
Now here is the question: Do you think this was just a bad hose or is it going to do this because of the big tires? Also the steering box got pretty hot. Is this common? How hot do these units run? I never touched a steering box right after being used before. But I think turning full lock several times in a row while sitting still is probly severe duty.
Thanks
Power steering pumps have a integral pressure relief valve to limit maximum pressure to 300/600 pounds, depending on manufacturer, this pressure occurs at full lock, if you hold it at full lock the oil will heat up rapidly and can get hot enough to cause severe burns. in normal use, the temperature will go to 150 degrees, keep in mind that these are ballpark figures.
The power steering hose should handle the pressure with ease and you may have gotten a bad hose or the pressure relief valve may be stuck.
Thanks for the temp and pressure info.
I got another hose and so far it is holding.
Do you know of a good source for PS specs and tech, some general reading on the subject?
Add a oil cooler to the power steering system, the 99 on Superduty Fords have a nice cooler that you can add. Do it in hard pipe as it will act like a radiator plus the no worries about rubber hose failures.
