transfer case?

Lately when our '99 is put into reverse, we hear a "clunk". My husband thinks this is the transfer case.

Anyone want to shed info?

thanks,

Marie

How 'bout we start with this...

Is is a 2x4 or 4x4? (I'm Assuming 4x4) Can't remember but does your 99 have a 2HI option or is it A4WD?
How many miles are on it?
Does it happen everytime?

It may be as simple as driveline slop or a slip joint that needs lubed or even a bad U-joint.

1999 - 2002 Expys have A4WD, 4HI and 4LO as transfer case switch selections.

Clunk

My experience with other vehicles is that a clunk when shifting forward/reverse direction has always been caused by worn out drive shaft Universal joints---with that mileage that might be a good bet---easy to check. As they get worse you may start to notice slight squeaking while rolling slowly in reverse.

It's just a thought--easy to check and not too expensive to repair---if you do replace U joint---I'd do both at the same time and the new ones may have grease fittings that the OEM doesn't have

Thanks for you all getting back to me so quick, I am sorry I didn't read the guidelines before posting, we have a AW4WD, 72,000 miles and it happens most of the time. After reading the replies to my husband he says it could be the u joint. We've made an appointment with our mechanic to check out.
