Looking at new super cab 4X4. I will be towing a boat and trailer that is less than 3500 lbs. I see some pretty good prices on the trucks with the 4.6 but have heard that it is not enough engine. If I go with the 5.4 which gears the 3:55 or the 3:73.
I tow with q 5.4 with 3.73 LS and it does a great job. It runs better and is just as or more economical(?) as the 4.6 with 3.55 (per my cousin who has one).
My '01 SCrew had the 5.4 with 3.55 gears and pulls my trailered Cobra which weighs about 4100 # with no major problems. My '04 Screw with the 5.4 and 3:73 LS pulls it about the same except on major inclines, where it pulls much better. Both of the 5.4's were/are modded with tuners, intakes, and exhaust..I would go with the 3:73's if I were you, I think you would be happier with the results...
I went with the 5.4 and 373 ls in my 04 screw . major factor for me was the simple fact that it wasn't that much more money to get the bigger engine and they were both rated to get the same mpg. And I gotta say that I am very happy that I went with the 5.4 as I drove a rental with the 4.6 and it was a dog compared to my truck
I also have the 5.4 with the 3.73 LS in my '04 SCrew. I tow a 5000 lb trailer and it does a great job. What convinced me to get the 5.4 over the 4.6 was a statement I read in a towing forum - "Nobody ever said I wish I had gotten the smaller engine".
