I did it, dropped $15K on a 97 350 4X4 XLT Crew with a 460. Truck has 63k miles on it and looks and runs like new except for the sloppy steering. Among the $$$ I am going to spend, tires-LinX-taxes, I was wondering which exhaust system was recommended. Not looking to wake up the neighbors, just improve performance and sound a little. Not used to a full size truck that you can't hear the engine running. Other than ranch hand bumpers the truck appears to be bone stock. Thanks
Changed from stock exhaust system on my F250, 5.4 last week. Decided not to go with dual exhaust so I replaced the stock muffler with a Series 40 Flowmaster, welded an extention from flowmaster to origional exhaust pipe (flowmaster shorter than orig. muffler) and had a 4" stainless exhaust extention welded onto orig. pipe and brought the stainless tip angled back more toward the bumper. Looks great and got the "tone" I wanted. Not too loud but just what I wanted especially around 1800 rpms. Total cost including parts, labor tax ect., $193.00 which I thought was very reasonable.
Had A 460 With Opened Up Exhaust, Ran And Sounded Great Unless You Tow Alot. After Two Hours Of Steady Throaty Tone Your Ears Keep Ringing, After You Stop.
I opted for an el-cheapo aluminized 3" cat-back system for my '97. Made a world of difference over the restrictive stock system. So, just about anything you do will help.
