We had a '97 4x4 w/4.6L engine and 3.55 gears. Had K&N FIPK, true duals, synthetic fluids and a Superchip. The single best mod, however, was installing 4.10 gears.
IMO, Ford was playing with CAFE by using the 4.6 & relatively high gearing. Get some lower gears so the engine's RPMs are up in the power band and you'll be quite happy with the 'little' 4.6L engine. Of course, with a 4x4, you need front and rear gears changed.
Hey this gear change seems like the best option. Where do I go to get the parts and is this a change that a local shop can make for me or is there anything special that needs to be done?
I'm pretty handy but not sure if I want to attempt this myself.
Truck is 4WD so I do have both front and back to change out.
I own a 2000 expedition with the 4.6 engine, although it NOT a powerhouse it does hold it own with the HONDA crowd !!! Spanked many a 4 banner with a 5000 lb truck ?? My truck off the get go is kind of a slug, once 3500 is on the tach she's a ROCKET !!! The rear end code is 17 whatever that means >> For a heavy mother that this thing is I really don't consider it to be UNDERPOWERED ?? Remember here !!! She's OVERWEIGHT FOR THE ENGINE !!! ROMP ON HER GOING 55-60 MPH AND SEE IF SHE'S STILL A DOG IN HER POWERBAND ??? Try it.
