make sure you've got all electric and vacume lines pluged in, make sure you have oil in it, dont be in a hurry nothin like droping your new engine on the floor. be sure to torque all bolts to specs. double and triple check everything. well good luck i hope she doesnt give you any problems

Is a squirt of oil in each cylinder a good idea, since the oil pump isn't primed at first fire-up?

A squirt of oil in each cylinder won't do anything as far as lubrication, or anything else oil is for, goes.

You should prime the oil pump before you start the engine with a drill, though. Run it until you see oil coming out the pushrods.

I picked up my engine yesterday but the guy didn't have the head done yet. I should have it in the next week though. They painted it gray since 84 was the first year that the engine was gray and not blue. I does look very nice. It was bored 30 over and oversized pistons were installed. We'll just have to see how it works.

Got a pretty decent deal today from the local salvage yard. I got a intake and exhaust manifold without all of the EGR stuff on it, a near new condition 1bbl carb, all the linkage, a starter, and a valve cover for $100. This will speed up my project a little bit.

I'm thinking about using royal purple in this new rebuild. Is this a good idea or should I use something else.

Jimbo Beam-

I would pick up some body pieces but the truck is pretty beat up. I got just about all of the good stuff off of the salvage truck except the engine. It is in great shape but I'm running short on money. As far as my truck goes I'm getting it to run before I start on the body work. The interior of the truck looks brand new and the outside looks pretty good for being 21 years old. It has very little rust compared to a lot of other trucks that I have seen. I plan on patching it up and repainting it the factory color. I'll keep you posted.

i would skip the synthetic until after the rings are broken in. i am partial to diesel engine oil and so are a lot of other users it offers maximum protection with a very robust add pack.

How long do you think I should wait until I switch to RP. I'm pretty set on using it. I have heard nothing but good things about it, plus I want this engine to last forever. I'm pretty attached to it already and I haven't even started it.
