I had significant vibration in my 97' Expedition. After some serious investigation, I noticed where the drive shaft connected to the tail stock of the transmission there was a SS sleeve that had backed out. The transmission shop showed me where the vibration had also cracked the housing. All was "fixed" for $660.00. Transmission guy calls me today and says it still has some vibration ( which he did forewarnme about). Said there was a couple of possibilities. The U-joints needed/could be replaced, or the drive shaft was bent. He said the U-joints we're sealed and they squeeked when you moved them, so he knows they're dry. Secondly, the drive shaft did not have anything visibly worng with it, but that it is possible it's bent. Do you guys have any suggestions? If I spend the 150.00 for the u-joint replacement and it doesn't work, then I'm out $450.00 for a drive shaft.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Also, has anyone else had this problem with their transmission?
Mine vibrated just before the torque converter let go and my pump suck in all those nifty filings.
$150 for U joints???? My god the joints themselves are only maybe $15 each and it only takes 10 minutes to pull a shaft and another 30 to replace the joints with a vise, then another 10-15 to put it back in. What's he putting in, titanium? I highly suggest another quote before any work is done, this tranny place doesn't sound like your friend.
If your driveshaft is bent, you can take it to a driveshaft spec. or machine shop and they'll check the true & balance to for about $25 or less. They'll also probably do the "U-ees" for about $50-75. Personally I doubt the driveshaft is bent, the vibration is more simply from bad "U-ees". While your there, check for play in the pinion gear. Rear seals would be on schedule to, but don't let me spend your money, I just like preventative maintenance.
