Diesel for coolant
Diesel for coolant
When my 99 F350 PSD decided diesel in my coolant would be a new and fresh approach, I had to step in. Here is the the final words on the culprit. Altho rare, hopefully my posts and those replies found within will help someone in a search down the road!
What to look for?
During routine maintenance I found a layer of fluid sitting on top of my coolant. Pulled out some to see, feel, smell and taste!LOL. Very interesting smell! The diesel fuel mixed with coolant smelled like turpintine? Each and everyone had the exact same verbage when they took the sniff test! I took a tool to ectract the top layer and drove the vehicle for another 2 weeks (always watching) when a layer built up of about 1/4 inch occured. The initial 1/2 inch layer was at 2,000 miles since last service. I did an immediate oil drop to see if any contamination of any fluids in the crank case when I first spotted the fluid. Found none!
Culprit & Fix
Injector cup. # 6 cylinder. Hairline crack at about 10mm in total length running straight up the brass cup starting right at the center of the first bend which is about 3/8 of an inch from the flat side on the bottom of the cup. Much easier to spot from the inside than the outside. Hairline description is way too big but you get the idea! Bright light and lots of looking to spot!
Repair
Extracted all injector cups on the even side and replaced all injector seals on all injectors both sides.
Lucky for me caught it early! A big Thanks to those here who posted replies in my posts for help! Was very helpful. Also a big thanks to "Rich" A very special diesel mechanic with a great deal of passion & skill!
