broken bolts (studs)

okay not being the worse thing I've tackled before, but does
anyone have any advise on how to and superoir tools to use
to remove two (2) broken off exhaust manifold bolts (studs).
There the first two (2) on the left front side of my 460cid.
ps and can it be done effectively without removing the mani-
fold? Currently there isnt an annoing fffttfffttfft sound no
leaks.

if the stud is broken off flush with the manifold you can try using a wire welder put a nut over the stud and weld starting on the stud, and filling up the nut let it cool enough to be solid and turn with a wrench. this works better if it's broken off flush with the head cause it has the added benifit of heating the threads and making them break loose.

then I don't know of a way to do it without removing the intake, but the welding method works better that way anyway.

Cool

If you are going to use an easy-out, use lots of penetrating oil first - if you happen to break that easy out, man it's a bi#%h recovering from that one!

If you can find a left hand drill bit, they work great. Alot of times the drill will grab the bolt and back it out. Most industrial supply houses can get them.
You can get them from http://www.mcmaster.com/ search for left hand rdill bit.

It's nearly impossible to remove those studs unless you remove the manifold. Two reasons why you should go ahead; 1. Manifold is probably warped or gasket is burned and it won't seal.,,2. Gives you the opportunity to upgrade all the manifold studs to new from Ford or aftermarket so others wont break and have you back where you are now. I have had very bad luck with trying to drill out something i can't see easily. Always wind up off center and cause more problems than I solve. Having said all that-do soak those two many times with penetrating fluid and get a left hand bit. I have had them just unscrew like nothing was wrong using a left hand bit- Snap on and Mac carry them, also. Good luck! Alex

I once removed one that was broken off about 1/4" into the head (without removing the manifold) by using a right angle drill motor, drill bit and then an ease-out (E-Z Out?). I used a piece of copper tubing inside the manifold bolt (stud) hole as a guide to keep the drill bit centered. I cut the tubing long enough to also serve as a "stop" to prevent drilling too far. I also had to wrap some thin cardboard around the tubing to make it fit very snug. Steel tubing would have been better but I didn't have any of the right size.

I will make an attempt to drill the things out while the manifold
is still on,only because i dont want to break anymore in the process of removing the manifold, if i cant well then i wont have a
choice. On the positive side of things i have convinced my wife to
add alittle more into my new motor fund, and unfortunatly i wont
be able to add to it this year becuase my newest tax credit wont
be out til feb 16 of 06. So thanks guys ill give it a shot with the drill and e-z-outs.

If you get them out make anti-seize your new best friend when installing new bolts. I'm hooked on that crap now and use it on EVERYTHING I bolt to my engine. Makes it so much nicer to work on later down the road.
