Picked up a 95 F-150 4x4 w/ 351 last week. 149k. Doing a complete maintenance round with it, and took it for the first long drive - started making a ticking sound under throttle - sounded a bit like an exhaust leak. When we stopped at the titling agent I popped the hood and it appeared the radiator fan was ticking against the plastic shroud when the engine was under torque. Did a 1st gear/brake on torque test and the engine only shifted maybe 1/2" upward.
So I after the trip I adjusted the shroud (it wasn't installed very well) so there was about 1/2" gap all around, but it still ticks. With the engine stopped I couldn't find any play in the fan shaft either.
Are the mounts getting tired? Since we'll be mostly towing, I'm tempted to spend $$ to change them anyway.
Can I change the mounts by supporting the engine with a jack? If so, where is the best safe place to put the jack? (I don't have easy access to an engine crane).
