Mirrors

I'm looking for a good tow mirror. Not the clamp on ones you can buy. I want to take off the oem mirrors and replace them with something like the ones on the new F350's. I have a 1997 Expedition.

Get the bigger mirrors off the 03 and up expeditions. Visibility is MUCH better. They bolt right on to yours since the doors are the same on all years of expeditions. The only difference will be the wiring harnesses, easy to work around though.

Do the '03 and up Expedition mirrors have the cool signal in them as well?

The ones with signals have orange lenses on the outside bottom of the mirror.

how would you hook-up the turn signal on a 97? or the heat, for that matter?

is there anyone who has done this conversation and can shed some light as to what kind of rewiring is required to get these to work properly on a 97?

thanks,
al

I've never cracked into a mirror on this truck, but it seems fairly straightforward. If the mirrior your are replacing is heated and has the turn signal, and the new one has the same features, then you are only looking at two wires. They are just sending a signal to whatever method of blinker or heater is already in the mirror. If they bolt right up to the existing mounting point, then I would imagine the wiring is pretty similar. So, get out the crimpers and get to splicin'!

They bolt right up. Cut the pig tail off the old mirrors, crimp them to the proper wires on the new ones and plug them in. I almost made this conversion on a 01 supercrew I had (same front doors as an expy), ordered the mirrors and everything, then it got wrecked. My wife has an 03 and the visibility out of those mirrors is great, that's what got me thinking about the conversion.

JK, Can you tell me how far out from the door do they stick? The clamp ons I have are about 16 inchs to the tip of them which is just about right for the trailer I'm pulling. But 20 inchs or more would be better.

Well, they don't stick out but about 2 more inches than the mirrors you have now. The mirror head is bigger though. I see now that you're wanting extensions for a big trailer. **** and Bestop make a trailering mirror for F150s but they wont fit expeditions or supercrews because they have different doors. The company that makes the trailering mirrors for the super duty and the Nissan titan may make some. Can't remember the name. Search the forums here and I'll try to do the same.

Just searched. Schefenacker makes those mirrors (www.ttt-mirror.com). none for 2002 and down expeditions.
checked out www.cipamirrors.com and www.powervisionmirros.com none at those.

Thanks for the help but none of those sites have a listing. The 1997 F150 looks like it has the same mirrors on it. Now there are listings for those. Does any know if they will fit. I really don't care about the wiring. I will take care of that. I would like something that will mount. Even if I need to make new holes.

They wont fit. If you look at the doors on the F150 reg and super cabs you'll see that they're different. Already considered the expy mirrors for my 98 F150, they wont fit and vice-versa.

JK, What is different between them? I was thinking about going to a body shop or a junk yard to see if I could find one off a F-150 to try it.

It's the shape of the door at the bottom of the window opening. Expeditions and Suoercrews have a thick piece of molding there. Regular F150s have a thin piece. So if you look at the mirror bases you'll see that Expys have about a 1/2" more material at the bottom. If the 150 mirrors bolted up you might be able to fabricate a filler piece. I'd try it with a junk yard mirror before you spend $400 on the others. Good luck.

I will see if some of the body shops or junk yards in town 1st. I don't need the whole mirror just the base. That way I can try it before I pay the big $'s. If it is just a little short I don't think that would be a problem to fix with either a metal plate behind it or just a new peice of rubber on the door. That sounds like an easy fix. Thanks for your help maybe there is hope yet.

You would think with all of these running around they would have mirrors out there that just bolt on. Ford did make a mirror for them at one time but it is not avaiable anymore. (and it looks really bad).
