Just wonderin but do you have to use a FORD front diff? Like if you have to replace it does it matter if it comes off of a dodge or chevy parts truck? Just wonderin.
not unless you are running a chevy t-case. the reason it matters is that the driveshaft would hit the engine crossmember if you had a ford t-case and chevy axle (or vice versa) they wouldn't line up and would cause some serious binding issues. so the answer to your question is make sure the t-case and front axle has the same drop. other than that it doesn't matter
well i assumed he was talking about the whole sha-bang but now that you mention it, maybe not! lol
in which case no they wont always swap over. there were all kinds of variations of spline counts and shaft length and bearing size and everything else.
Well know it would also depend on which diff he is talking about on a D44 for instance the carriers will swap over for the most part but the gears definatly will not. basically more info needed to properly answer the question.
yea I was talkin bout like the actual diff. The gears I understand would have to match up and stuff. BUt the actual differential, could I get that off of a dodge for example and after makin sure the gears match up, could I bolt that diff onto my Ford? Lets just say a Dana 44. If the dodge has a dana 44 front, could that fit my truck?
nope, ford is all alone on the side of the truck that pumpkin is on.... drivers side, vs chevy or dodge having it on the pass side, now, if you wanted to so some serious mods, it can be done
you can use the carrier from anything that is a D44 even the rear of a scout with a D44, you can't use the gears from anything but a ford though cause they are cut differently (reverse cut, reverse rotation) only thing is make sure which series it is such as you need a series 3 for 3.73 and down, and a series 4 for 3.89 and up. now the carrier is about the only thing you can cross (although I think the outer axles are the same for dodge,a dn ford. Chebs are slightly longer)
thanks for the help guys. Hey I got another question, just wonderin but with chevy and dodge havin all the stuff on the passenger side, shouldnt the t-case shifter be on the passenger side too? How does that work out and all that?
chevy and dodge both have the diff on the pass side. The t-case is clocked to output on the passenger side, but the shifter is still at approx 12 o clock

the shifter bolts kind of to the side on the case but is bent so that it comes just about straight up through the doggy door! if you get under there and look you will see what i mean
