I've got a '79 F-350 4x4 Supercab that's going to be fuel injected. I was wondering if I could get one of those 38 gal. rear fuel tanks from ..catalog for a '79 but then get the the sending unit for a '85-86 460. I take it that the 460's were fuel injected for these years since I've seen a separate listing for them from the '80-84's. In the end I know I can resort to a fitting that splices into the fill hose, but since I'm ordering a new tank anyways, my as well get the '79 tank and the '85-86 sending unit. Thanks in advance, Mike B.
Check in the Carb and Fuel forum, they may know whether the sending unit plate is the same size. You may have to extend and modify the tubes and gage sender anyway. If they are not the same size you could always braze a return tube into the tank or into the sender plate. you can get one of those big tanks from JC Whitney and eBay also. Use the <SEARCH> function to find more options.
AS far as splices it is easier to splice into the vent hose.
Thats for the info. LMC's tank does come with either a new sending unit or an extention for the original one. I had the thought of brazing a another tube in the sending plate as a last resort, haven't done much of that sort of thing though. The reason I mention about the splice into the fill hose is that I saw an adapter in a Jeg's catalog that would go into the fill hose and had a 5/16" or a 3/8" hose bib on it for the return line. Rather not have 2 additional hose clamps to possibly fail if I don't have to. Thanks again, Mike B.
Considering the price of a sender they are more likely to come with an extension :-)
When I braze something like that extra tube I drill an undersize hole and then flare or dimple the hole to the proper size for the tube for a little better surface to braze to. Afterwards it looks like factory work. I use a double flaring tool to put a hose retaining "bead" on the tubing also.
Thanks for using FTE!
