Ok i pulled the motor on my dads truck and it was a 351M and it was in need of a serious rebuild. I recently got access to a Clevland and since they are both big blocks what are the chances my motor mounts and transmission will both line up for a really easy swap?
the clevland is not a big block and will not bolt up to the M tranny. you can only run another 351m, 400 or 460 to that tranny. Sorry, i would not suggest going to a cleveland anyway it was a hi rpm power motor not something suited for a truck
Ok i thought they were both big block so i was mistaken. I guess i will just go through with the rebuild. Need to have it done before I go back to school so I was trying to find a quick way out and save the M for something else.
What does the 351C match up with for bellhousing applications? I have a c-4 that I poulled out of a 400M application whichj I now want to use with a 351C...what bellhousinbg do I need to bolt up to the C-4?

I am wanting to find a 400 and use the parts out if in my 351 but its hard to find too much around here and the junkyard wants an arm and a leg for everything.

i dont believe there ever was a C4 behind a 400, i think that tranny is a C6. regardless it wouldnt fit a 351c. so you would need to find a 351m or 400 or 460. otherwise that tranny is no good and must find another one. Personally im not a big fan of the 351m-400's. there is practicly no aftermarket for them and you have to build them way up to get any power from them. once you do that reliability goes right out the door.
Believe it or not, there was a package from 1973 to 1978 that utilyzed a C-series tranny with a removable (bolt-on bellhousing) with a 400 M that was available in Lincolns and trucks...I have two of these. I have been told by two tranny shops that they are the C-4 series. The difference is the bolt pattern to the tranny from the bellhousing is different than any C-4 tranny bellhousing I've ever seen ands will not match up to the bellhousijng for standards either. Must be a unique one. I do have the bellhousing number though is anyone is interested.
Don't know if I've ever seen a c-4 behind a 400. All I've ever seen were c-6 and fmx's. The fmx also had a removable bell housing and was used behind 351m /400s.
they have a cast iron body with a removable aluminum bell housing. very heavy. i know they were built in the 70's i don't know if any were built before then. they shifted ok when they worked but could go out in a minutes notice. i always junked them and went with the c-6 when i needed a heavier trans.
