How much for a rebuild...

I have a 1992 Ford Explorer (4.? 6-cyl. engine, 4WD).

There is a tapping coming from under the valve cover on the driver's side. The car also has NO guts at all. It feels like it's running on 5 cylinders, if not less. Figure it is a valve, or lifter arm, or something else I don't feel qualified to dig into. I've added Marvel Mystery Oil, and changed the plugs (except the furthest one back on the passenger side, which anyone with an arm larger than a string of spaghetti would have trouble reaching). No change.

I'm open to suggestions for fixing the tapping, but I'm also considering having a mechanic give the engine an overhaul.

How much do you think it should cost me to have it pulled out, rebuilt, and put back in?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yours,
Tom

i think the ford exp. is a 4.0

i have no idea how much it would cost, i imagine it could vary quite a bit. you can get a rebuilt block for less than $1k i'm sure, i know someone with a 4.2 longblock in florida, it just needs a good hone or bore b/c it was out in the rain and has some rust on it....the guy only wants 300 for it

Tom,
The Explorer does use the 4.0 motor. I moved the thread to the proper forum in hopes you'll get some good info.
