Slotted, Drilled Rotors!

Hey Everybody!
Ive been seeing alot of these slotted and drilled rotors of some of these truck shows.
Question 1:Is anybody here using them and how do you like them?
Question 2: Can i get some for a 97 OBS and if so where?

Thanks guys with any input on this.
BTW Just put in a Jasper Tranny, and ol red is running great!

I have them front and rear with oem pads. Trying to cure the vibration while braking from warped rotors that returns about every 10k miles. Just pulled 11k lb camper 3000 miles- so far so good. Have had them on about 5k miles. Don't really notice any better stopping though.

slotted rotors

I just upgraded my stock rotors to slotted ones from PowerSlot, front and rear. These are the same style rotors I run on my Grand-Am Cup '95R Cobra racecar, and even the same pads I'd use on a short race track (Hawk HPS). This combo provides a significant improvment in braking just from a seat of the pants feel, and the pads will not fade unuless you are trying to race your tow rig! The slots in the rotor simply help get gases produced by the pads out from between the pad and rotor, and only "help" when things are HOT. That said, I have seen brake rotor temps of nearly 1000 deg F on the front of my '99 F250 4x4 towing 12000 lbs of trailer in Utah, and I can tell you that the new rotors and pads are just the ticket!

Byddog,

Yes ridden in an Ex with the Powerslots, and Hawk pads, WAAAAAAAAAAAy better stopping power. In fact a set are on their way for my 03 6.0 as we speak. We will be stock ing them soon for all the SD's and Dodges and Duramax turcks, theu impressed me that much. And really prettyy reasonable (almost the same cost) as compared to replacement stock parts too! Call us if you have any questions etc.

Well, I don't have any hard data, but if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say a 10% improvement in stopping distance and a 100% improvement in fade resistance. Some of the fade resistance comes from the slots in the rotors, but most is the pad compound. As for the stopping power, most of that is the pad. You can check out the Hawk web site at:

www.hawkperformance.com

I like the HPS compound on my truck, but you can get others...

03 7.3 Ex Napa's drilled & slotted now warped again!

I was hoping for for a better then OEM pads and rotors but not just 5 months in and warped again. I installed the pr86914L & R rotors $129 ea. and cmx-7625a ceramic pads $78 on fronts only. Rears are fine. Still OEM (77K)

I checked at my local Napa crapa dealer and was told they were no longer carring drilled rotors for the super duties as they were having problems with cracks and warpage. Thats why I went with Power Slots.

I know I won't sound too cool, but here goes. I've been involved with racing (dirt track) and read up on many things to get my car right. When it came to drilled rotors (to save weight, not improved braking), the books said to leave the rotors stock. The gains in saving weight were overshadowed by the decrease in stopping power. More surface area = more stopping power. As far as the cooling effect of slotted/drilled rotors vs. stock - 1) you really have to abuse them to get brake fade 2) if you do use them alot, switch to better pads, switch to a better fluid or run cooling ducts to them.

Your right. Drilled rotors are no good for our application. Pads are where people are seeing the biggest improvement. But I do think that slotted rotors are a plus, seeing the amount of load that can be put on/behind our trucks.

Roaky81, can you explain "better pads" I am confused. I think I want to go to ceramic pads, but not sure of the benifits or negatives in doing so. A lot of guys swear by the factory pads, but I am not that impressed....

Better pads means a better material i.e. metallic, ceramic, asbestos , etc. I'm a cheapie when it comes to brake pads. As long as it stops me and the truck, I'm happy. I'll learn to live with the inadequacies of Ford brakes. I also tow a toy hauler and I'm careful when setting the brake bias. I want to feel the trailer brakes doing their part.
