Question Distributor/Timing

I have a 1972 F100 with only 45,700 actual miles. The motor runs smooth, but sometimes it will begin to skip and eventually stall. I have to loosen the set bolt and slightly turn the distibutor, then the truck will restart and run fine. Does anyone have any ideas? Your help would be greatly appreciated. My email address is: inkpusher2000@yahoo.com

I think the low voltage return path is through the body of the distributor to the engine block and back to the negative of the battery. Maybe sometimes you don't have good contact between the dist. and the block. If you cleaned off the hold-down clamp and the lip where it contacts the dist. it might help.

Things to look and inspect.
  1. It seem like your points are shot. (Replace points and condenser)
  2. Remove the distributor housing and visually inspect the lower gear cotter pin is not sheared. (replace cotter pin)
  3. Verify the the counter weights on distributor is working correctly.
Option 1.
Replace items on distributor which are broken.

Option 2.
Replace distributor.

Replace O-ring on distributor housing.

Good luck

Does the dist. clamp have to be clean?

I painted my dist. housing and my hold down but motor runs fine.
