this is a 1986 351w H.O. motor in my 1978 f100. 4 barrel factory carb. Trying to get the motor running, been sitting awhile. when I try to start it, It will run for 5 or 10 seconds, then die and not start back up. I can see gas pumping from the jets when I pump the throttle, so I know it is getting gas. after it will not start back up, there is a strong gas smell. It will not start back up with the choke open, closed, full throttle, part throttle. I have held the throttle open to try to let it dry out, no luck.
Anybody have any suggestions? how hard is this carb to rebuild? also, there are 2 metal lines, 1 in front of the carb, and one in back, both running to the front of the engine, and then maybe cutting back(they are cut off where the rubber part starts). Are these fuel return line, or something for the charcoal canister? thanks, Ben
When you pump the throttle, you're seeing gas coming out of the accelerator pump. This doesn't mean you're necessarily pulling gas from the float bowl through the main jet. If the truck's been sitting awhile, invest in a carb rebuild kit, take the thing apart and rebuild it. I rebuilt mine about a year ago and it was well worth the effort. Your gas might be old too, or have water in it.
thanks, guys. i didn't change anything tonight, went out and started the truck right up. I ran it to operating temp. It wouldn't quite idle. almost, but I had to keep my foot on the pedal to keep it running just above idle. I noticed the choke didn't seem to open up the way it should the whole time it was running. It is an electric choke, and I have keyed on power running to it. this is an 86 bronco 351w H.0. the choke is only electrically operated, right, and not vacuum? I couldn't see any vacuum lines running anywhere from it or a place for a vacuum line to go. this motor is packing 50 pounds of oil pressure at idle(or close to idle as it will run), and I can't wait to get it out of the garage and on the road. now I just gotta figure this choke/idle problem out, and i should be set. anybody have any ideas why the choke isn't opening the way it should? thanks, Ben
Get in to the linkage with some spray lube to try and loosen it up.
If it doesn't > Hold the accelerator linkage and see if the butterfly
Valve is loose to close or open.
Otherwise, maybe the choke spring has lost it's Ummph.
