4.9L I-6 Stalling

Whenever I put my truck in reverse it stalls out right away, I have to hold the pedal almost to the floor to keep it from stalling, This sometimes happens in drive too, also when i turn the steering wheel at idle, I am becoming increasingly frustrated by this. Any help would be appreciated

Maybe the truck is suffering from a bad Manual lever position sensor, the MLPS is mounted on the side of the E4OD and tells the computer what gear you are in. The IAC could be clogged, the IAC is on top of the throttle body, right where the air intake comes from, and is easy to disassemble and clean. The Throttle position sensor may also need attention but, they are pretty durable.
Search this forum, for TPS, IAC, and MLPS, for other info.
You also may need to pull the diagnostic codes for us. See fordfuelinjection.com for related and very good info about the sensors and actuators I mentioned.

I would check your TPS ( Throttle Position Sensor) My 1994 F150 I-6 does the same thing I ran codes on it last night and came up with error code 998 Hard Fault FMEM Engaged. The throttle sensor could be corroded or have low voltage will possibly need cleaned or replaced. there are some videos on Youtube of how to test it. When this goes bad it puts the truck in Limp Home Mode. it will get decreased fuel millage, hesitate when accelerating and will also shutter or buck, will stall out at idle and or will have a rough idle (will sound like a misfire) Mine stalls out when I put it in Reverse Low or 1 and 2 gear

Read this thread ..... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...e-fixed-2.html

This was half way down ................................

There is a TSB for the E4ODs for a revised filter design. Previous designs allowed the filter to sit flat on the bottom of the pan if they became loose, the new ones have "feet" to prevent this.

Article No.
97-24-23

11/24/97

^ TRANSMISSION - E4OD - ENGINE STALL DURING ENGAGEMENT

LIGHT TRUCK:
1996 BRONCO
1996-97 ECONOLINE, F-150-350 SERIES, F-53 MOTORHOME
1997 EXPEDITION
1998 NAVIGATOR

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to revise the Service Procedure.
ISSUE:
Some vehicles may stall when the transmission is placed into gear. This may be caused by the transmission fluid filter becoming detached and/or loose.

ACTION:
Install a new design fluid filter and seal assembly. The new design has legs molded into the plastic filter cover (Figure 1). This new design filter does not require using the rectangular transmission pan magnet.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Follow all the normal diagnostic procedures outlined in the appropriate model/year Service Manual. Repair as required. If all normal diagnostics fail to correct the problem, refer to the following Steps.
1. Remove the transmission fluid pan to determine if the transmission fluid filter has dropped down or is not firmly seated in the pump bore.

2. If the filter has dropped down into the pan, discard the filter assembly and remove the filter seal from the pump bore.

CAUTION : BE CAREFUL NOT TO SCRATCH OR DAMAGE THE PUMP BORE WHEN REMOVING THE SEAL.

NOTE : DO NOT REMOVE THE ORIGINAL FLUID PAN MAGNET FROM THE FLUID PAN OTHER THAN TO CLEAN AND REINSTALL.

3. Install a new Filter and Seal Assembly (F6TZ-7A098-AB: 4X2, F6TZ-7A098-BB: 4X4). Refer to Figure 1.

CAUTION : DO NOT USE THE RECTANGULAR TRANSMISSION PAN MAGNET WHEN USING EITHER OF THESE NEW DESIGN FILTER AND SEAL ASSEMBLIES.

CAUTION : DO NOT REPLACE A REUSABLE PAN GASKET WITH A CORK GASKET, THIS MAY RESULT IN A TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK. CLEAN AND REUSE UNLESS DAMAGED. REPLACE CORK GASKET WITH CORK GASKETS.

4. Refill transmission as required using MERCON(R) Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) (XT-2-QDX).

Does it slam into drive and reverse and shift hard In every gear? You need to pull codes from ecm. Mine was doing the same but I was having codes 622 and 625. Code 625 means line pressure is at max which would cause harsh engagement and shifts.

Trans filter dropping into pan is very common. Pull engine codes before doing anything else
