Usually you can tell by the sound of the exhaust, it will be almost totally silent at idle and sound like a huge fan when you go above idle. I'm going by the way dodges and chevs are though, they usually have some kind of rumble at idle and only sound as described at WOT. Also the engine will be way down on power and overheat on hills. Also, has it let out any nasty backfires through the exhaust latly? That'll do it. Any check engine lights etc.
