Transmission Trouble

I bought a used F150 (4x4, auto) a few weeks ago, it has 116K miles on it, it checked out good when I bought but last night the tranny "thunks" real loud between 1st & 2nd and when the overdrive turns off (when going up a hill) or when you turn it off with the switch.
Any ideas what is going on and how extensive the repair might be?

change fluid, filter and crain convertor.

he meant drain the converter
