I still have a clunk in my 96 FE Sport 4.0 V6 4x4 Auto., Limited Slip Diff, 114,000 miles. Symptoms are shifting from R to D, clunk. D to R, clunk. When driving, it ONLY happens when I slow down (right around 20 mph), clunk.
My mechanic said my u-joints were fine and that my splines were worn. My ujoints seem fine to me. I've greased my slip yoke, changed my transfer case fluid, changed my rear differential fluid (including Limited Slip additive). Gears in rear diff. seem fine. Transmission seems fine while driving, shifts fairly smooth.
Should I take my mechanic's advice and replace the driveshaft? Am I missing something? It really sounds like it's coming from the transfer case. Maybe it's time to bring it in and have them keep it until it's fixed.
Couple other things to note...I'm concerned only cause I'm trying to sell it. No one wants a nice truck that clunks even if it's "normal". Also, I've tried it with OD off and in 4x4 but still clunks. Lastly, when driving in second gear, doesn't seem to do it (the decel clunk that is) so maybe you have to be in a higher gear or something.
If you lift the rear end (and put it on stands) can you turn the drive shaft while it's in park? Try using a long screw driver or bar and put it through the U joint and see if it will turn. If there's play you can see where it is. You may have to try this from both ends of the drive shaft.
