E40D solenoid help!

Hello all, I have a 93 ford bronco with the 351 and e40D and recently I have been having problems with my truck going into 1st and 3rd. Even if I pull the lever down manually it will not go into 1st or 3rd. I have to take off in 2nd and go straight to 4th. And if I try to take off in drive it will try and take off in 4th. Took it into the trans shop and they said there were some solenoids out. and luckily they would have to break into the transmission. BUT they wanted to charge me $300 to change the solenoids. Does anyone know anything about any solenoids that would have anything to do with shifting. I think this is probably a lil high. what do you guys think??

The E4OD solenoid pack is replaced as a whole unit. Even if 1 solenoid is out. $300 for replacement by a shop isn't too bad as the pack it's self will be half that. They will drop the pan, the filter and it is the first thing you will see, it will be on the right rear side of the transmission under the valve body. Held in place by tamper proof "torx" head scews.
If any of the 2 solenoids used for shifting go out or stop receiving power you will only start out in 4th gear or manual second. the other 2 are for TCC lock up and electronic pressure control
Hope this helps
Mike

Another thing to test is the MLPS. there's real good article on the Ford Fuel Injection,Ford's MLPS . 4th gear starts is one of these problems, but so is neutraling out after shifting as well as other wierd stuff. Have a look at the artilcle and see if everything is OK with the MLPS.
