I have a question on a Ford truck that a friend of mine's neighbor has. He says it is a 73'-79' Ford 1/2 ton 4x4 with a 460 auto with no tranfer case shifter at all. He says it is fulltime 4x4 with auto hubs and has no lo/hi range or 2wd/4wd selection. I have never seen one of these, but thay don't mean they didn't make one. My truck had a 390 4-speed with that Dana 20 or 21 case that didn't have a lo/hi range in it. It just had the 2wd/4wd selector. I guess that was because of the granny gear in the 4-speed. I now have a C-6 with a NP203 with the part-time conversion. I like it much better, although a NP205 would have been better. Has anyone heard of a Ford truck like this in the last 30 years?
Have you personally seen this vehicle? First of all,there wasn't a Ford 4wd with a 460 from the factory until 1980.Second,I've worked on all kinds of transfer cases and never heard of a Ford pickup w/o some kind of shifter.NP205,NP203,and the earlier 1/2 ton in/out style is all I know of in a 73-79.
That's what I thought, too. I'm going to go look at it to see what it really is. I've owned ford trucks all my life and have never seen or heard of one like this fellow claims to have. If it is something weird, I'll let y'all know. I bet someone is confused.
Please post back on what you find. My question is if it is a full time 4X4 the why would it need locking/unlocking hubs auto or otherwise. If you unlocked the front hubs in a full time system wouldn't the truck not be able to move because the differential in the transfer case would send all the power to the front axle which wouldn't drive anything? And wern't autohubs not available before 1980? I've always heard that the full time transfer cases could shift between 4 positions: Lo, Hi, Lo-lock, Hi-lock.
