FE Guy here! I am going to make the move to 460 engines for a lot of reasons. I have searched the posts and did not find any comments on using studs on mains and heads on 460s? I used studs on FEs and never had a failure, ever. I plan to maintain that record with 460s. So, who uses studs on mains and heads. Did you encounter any problems? FE oil pans have an interference problem with the rear main cap when using studs. Will there be any stud clearence or interference issues with the 460 using a rear sump from Ford Motorsport? This engine will be in a 66 F100 so there are no issues related to removing the heads with the engine in the truck.
On a 385 motor you really don't need studs until you get into some serious HP levels. Some people have said they had cap walk after installing main studs were there was none with the original bolts. On the heads just use a good head gasket like a 1018 Fel-Pro.
If you do use main studs there are no interferance problems.
at the most I would say run arp bolts, no you won't have interference problems, but really you don't need studs. I run head studs but that is with alum heads on a race engine but take a look at the bolts they are 9/16ths you ain't gonna break em, and on a street engine like you are wanting to run I personally wouldn't waste my money even on the ARPs yes they are a good upgrade but you won't have any problems with stock bolts. same thing on the mains those are 1/2" bolts I know guys running 600hp at over 6500 rpm with the factory original bolts and even one guy running nitrous using those bolts with no problems that I have ever seen infact the only failure I have seen the bolt was still solidly in the threads in the piece of the block that busted bolt was in fine shape.
If it makes you feel better fine but IMHO you are gonna spend a lot of money on something you don't need
Oh I run ARP BOLTS and a main girdle on my race engine, 2 bolt block 4.3 stroke crank and twist it 7600 regularly with no problems.
