hello, ive got an 87 f-150 4x4 with an efi 5.0l which im fixin to swap with an 80 302 i got out of an f-150....i already have factory replacement shorty headman headers on the 87, will they fit on the 80 motor, or are the heads different? thanks
You do know that you can't interchange the flexplates between those two engines as the '80 has a 28oz imbalance and the '87 is 50oz? Hopefully they are set up for the same type of tranny so you don't have to go scrounging for a pre-'81 28oz flexplate. -TD
Well, for an automatic it's called a flexplate, but yeah, the flywheel-thingie that the torque converter bolts to. So, you'll have to see if the converter for the AOD will bolt up to your '80 C6 flexplate. I would have thought it would, but ronclark above says different. I used to have a Ranchero with a 351C in it, I put an AOD behind it using the same flexplate...your results may vary! I just wanted you to be aware of the imbalance difference between the years you're working with. It sucks to get it all together and have a nasty vibration that can kill your engine. -TD
The AOD flexplate for a 302 is 164 teeth and the c6 flexplate will more than likely be 157 teeth which means the starter from the c6 will not work on the AOD. Even on a 351w where the flywheels are 164 teeth the c6 takes a different part number than the AOD. The AOD and c4 uses the same part number on 351w. I just got through doing research on them with the help of Kemical.
So, the first thing he needs to do is verify that his '80 302 flexplate is actually 157 teeth. If so, then he needs to find a 164-tooth, 28oz imbalance flexplate, possibly from a 351W since they stayed with the 28oz imbalance throughout production...Bob, sounds like ya gotta go count some teeth! -TD

Keep in mind that the 351 AOD-c4 flexplate is different from the c6 flexplate even though both are 164 tooth
