I drove my 1951 F1 for the first time at night and noticed that the Driver side rear turn signal would not work when the headlights were on. All other turn signals work but that one. I have checked the bulb and the rear wiring but nothing seems to be wrong. The turn signal does work with out the lights on. Where do I look next? Could it be in the headlight switch? I still have the original wiring (which is in great shape) and the 6 volt positive ground system.
Try an easy fix first. Run a ground wire from the battery ground to the socket for the rear lamp. Make sure you get good contact at both ends.
Sometimes a weak ground can show up as a loss of current to one part of the electrical system when other parts are put under load. When the load is removed, the component with the weak ground works again.
Aside from that, ya got me stumped. The turn signal switch gets its power for both left and right signals from the same wire, so I doubt it's the light switch. I've been wrong lot's of times before, though.
I vote with Earl. A bad ground has been, more often than not, the culprit on these systems and that sounds like your problem here. I would discount the switch also.
Do you have a Shop Manual? I found that studying the signal turn switch schematic (and others) has helped diagnose numerous problems in the system. Big help in noodling out problems.
