Changing tranny fluid.

The dealership wants me to do all the maintenance that is possible when I come in for oil changes. My question is, how often do you change fuel filter and how often do you change the tranny fluid? They say to change fuel filter every 15k in trucks. They say to have the tranny fluid changed every 36k. My last 2 trucks I actually never serviced the tranny the hole time I owned them. They had 145k and 117k. I don't really remember changing the fuel filter either.

I was thinking the fuel filter about 50k and tranny at about 75k. I put on about 24k a year. I mostly run highway. I tow a medium boat (1400 lbs.) about 3 times a month, so it's not really stressing anything on the truck. I'm just curious what people do on average for maintenance. Thanks for your input.

Like yourself, I have never touched the tranny (other than checking the fluid level) on anything I have owned. Look in your manuel booklet there you will find Ford's recommended service schedule for every aspect of the vehicle.

After having to reaplce a trans on my 92 Explorer, I vowed never to do that again due to lack of maintenance. Now that I have my F150, I will be following my regular maint. routine which is trans every 15K, fuel filter at same, and oil change every 10K (I'm using Mobil1, so doing it more often that that is very costly, not to mention the oil holds up for many more miles then I'm givinig it anyway)

99Xplr,

The oil may hold up, but the filter should be changed more frequently. There was a study conducted by some guys on the web that took their oil out to 15K-18K before changing. They sampled the oil every 1000 mi and changed filters when the suspended solids reached a certain level. Was roughly 5K for the filter.

There conclusions were that the extended oil life was partly due to the topping up due to frequent sampling, adding a quart at the filter changes. They reccomended changing the filter at 5K and the oil at 10K. The test was with Mobil 1 by the way and they were in the process of testing Amsoil for comparison.
