E350 Wheel Studs

Just returned from a 4000+ mile trip to Wyoming with our 2003 E-350 15 passenger van. Just west of Iowa City, IA, we had a blowout on the right rear. Broke off 3 studs removing the wheel (with the lug wrench) - tires had just been rotated 2 days before. Found a Ford dealer in Des Moines who had the right studs, according to the part numbers. They couldn't put them in, but the dealer on the other side of town could. Took the van and studs in, but found that the studs were too long. Had to pull the rear axle to replace the studs, and then found that the diameter of the splined part of the stud was too big. The service manager found some studs at a NAPA store that worked (still too long, but that wasn't a problem at this point), but the application for that stud was for a 1983 E-350. Has anyone had a similar experience? I think someone forgot to torque the nuts when the tires were rotated - just cranked them down with the air wrench. I'm a little scared to try to move the other 24 nuts - think I'll take it back to the dealer that rotated the tires to have them loosen them.

All,

"Amen" to taking the bill and the van back to the dealer! Two ways to think about it, never take it back after that OR believe that they'll get the message and treat you right from now on...

I broke a stud on my Excursion. The only auto parts store replacements are M14-2.0. Mine are M14-1.50. The dealer had both M14-1.5 (3C3Z1107BA) was $10. each. Had to get it. They are about an inch longer than needed. It was a rear and by cutting off a 1/2 inch I was able to get it in by just removing the disk brake rotor.

Anyone know how to find a commercial source for a Ford # 3C3Z1107BA???????

if the dealer overtightened the wheel studs with an impact, they may have streched the studs. take it back to the dealer to have all of the studs inspected and let him know you are going to have another shop inspect it also after they are done with it to keep him honest.
