Ring & Pinion Play

My 8.8 has a lot of play in the ring and pinion. It has so much play that when I let off on the gas when cruising down the road that when I get back on it I can hear it clank somewhat loud. How do I remedy this problem? Just trying to see what my options are here. I will also mention that I just changed the diff. fluid and it was nasty. It was not even a gear oil consistency. It was a light brown and almost water like. I have also noticed that the breather plugs up from time to time too. Thanks guys for the help.

The condition of that oil sounds like you're getting water/mud in there somehow so keep an eye on that vent and if you hit deep stuff from time to time you may want to add a hose to it and route it high.

As for the play, you'd need to pull the 3rd member and adjust the backlash. You'll need a dial indicator for this. I believe the 8.8 is set up like the 9" where it can be adjusted with screws and you don't have to screw with shims like the Dana axles.

The 8.8 is more like a D44 than the 9". It does not have a removable third member. The carrier adjusts with shims, but it is easier than a D44 to set up.

Well that's good to know. I think Satan invented shims for axles.

I do know that it is nothing like the 9 inch and that it is more like a Dana 44. It looks somewhat straight forward. This would be the first time for me doing this. I know that I can do it, I would just like to know how to do it. If anyone can give me any hints on this it would be greatly appreciated.

go on ebay and find a user by the name of 'badshoe'. plunk down the $35 for his 8.8 rebuild DVD. Best money you will ever spend.

I agree. I think he personally had a say in the placement of the carrier shims on the D44. At least on the 8.8 the shims are on the outside of the bearings

MetallicaFan, I just regeared both my axles (Dana 60 and 70) which used shims. It's a major pain because it can be time consuming and tedious but take your time. If you have the right tools and patience you'll get it. My front axle went really quick but the rear was a little bit of a headache. Still, beats paying someone hundreds of dollars to do this. The fact that the shims sit outside the bearings will make it 10X easier.

The 8.8 is known for having problems with the pinion becoming loose and this will directly affect your back lash and it will ruin your gear set in no time at all if driven.

I agree. Check to make sure the pinion nut hasn't backed off. Happened to mine once.

grab the rear yoke where it goes into the diff and see if it moves in any direction other than rotational.

Well I dont have the problem. But I can turn the yoke a ways before it grabs anything. What should I look into as far as replacement?

depends on how far you can turn it. If it is alot of slop, you probably need to replace your gears. How many miles on it?
