I was wondering why, the maintenance guide for my 2000 Excursion with Diesel engine keeps requiring a cooling additive needing to be added? What is it for, I'm been flushing and changing the cooling system every 30,000 miles.
The additive is to prevent a specific type of cavitation erosion from occurring on the water jacket side of the cylinders. The new coolants going into the 6.0L prevent this without the additive. However, you can not use the new coolant as it will attack certain parts of your cooling system.
rlay, I work for a caterpillar dealer and work on diesel engines, as roy stated the conditioner additive is to prevent cavitation on the cylender liners. You can buy diesel engine coolant from a cat dealer or you can put in regular coolant and buy some conditioner additive and add it seperatly. You can also buy test strips to check the conditioner level. You shouldnt need to flush the cooling system every 30.000 miles, That is way to extreem. I hope this helps, I am sure you can buy this additive elsewhere but where I work at a cat dealership I get it here.
Good post Brian. It is not only important to maintain the system by adding the Diesel Coolant Additive (DCA) but in the correct concentration. The test strips are a good and convenient way of doing this. See your Motorcraft dealer or your dealer parts department. The Test strips are available in the fluids & chemicals catalog. (I'm not sure thats the official name of the book) I have heard that too much of the additive has been attributed to premature failures of the water pump. Also, too much additive will result in a gel like build-up that collects in various places in the cooling system.
BTY: The new coolant is the Motorcraft Gold Super Premium Coolant. The best advice is to put back in what you took out.
