I'm about to try to refit my a/c in my 1982,it has not worked since I bought her a year and a half ago.I called the guy I bought it from and he said it had been a long time since it had worked and they owned it for tweenty years. He said when his dad had it he remembers him saying it had a leak somewhere. So the system has been empty for a LONG time.I can get the dryer for $40.00 and the 134-a conversion kit for $43.00 the compresser clutch turns by hand so I dont believe its locked up.I'm worried that the system has been empty for so long that the seals in it may be dry rotted, the system has been closed except for what ever leak may be there but closed for the most part.Does anyone know if the seal can go bad from sitting that long? Also has anyone had this problem with a system sitting for so long and then got it working again?Any advice would be great.Thanks.
my girlfriends car had been without a/c for about two years. i changed the hoses and had the system tested and recharge. it worked for about 2 days and then the compressor started leaking. so, will it leak after it has set for so long, no. at least not until you start using it again.
she is in the process of getting another car, so i don't have to worry at her car. but, i have the same problem with my bronco and i have decided that IF i ever fix the a/c i will probably replace everything under the hood, i.e. hoses, condensor, compressor, etc. i think it would be just as cheep, if not cheeper since i will only have to charge it once.
The seals can go bad from sitting idle. My 83 had two orifice tubes, one in the line at the dryer and one in the condenser line, don't forget to replace them too, if you have them.
