Dually or not?

Hello Fellow truck owners. I currently own a 2003 F-350 with 6.0 liter diesel. The truck is currently a single wheel but I'm considering a dually with 4.10 gear ratio to pull a new 2005 Cruiser 5th wheel (9,000-11,000) pounds. I currently am getting about 18 mpg on my 03' but was wondering what people are getting with the 4.10 as far as mpg.; both with hauling and no hauling situations? Help me make a good informed decision on whether its worth getting a dually with the 4.10?

there is some great info on fuel mileage with the 4.10 gears and why it is actually better than with the 3.73. Do a search and it should come up..unless someone has the link handy???? I have the dually 4X4 with 4.10 and love it. I tow a 13000lb fifth wheel and would have it no other way. I came from a SRW PSD and there is no comparison. I much prefer the ride in the dually even when not towing. I am getting mid 19's on the freeway at 70mph and about mid 15's around town. Towing I get between 12 and 13. My last trip with my trailer I got 12.7 calculated. You will regret not getting the 4.10. Good luck.

Without a doubt, you'll be happier with the dually for towing. As far as mileage goes, mine has 2200 miles on it and I'm getting 14, mixed city and highway.

I have an 05 dually with 3.73. I would go with the 4.10's if I had the choice. Truck tows ok but I think the 4.10's would make for an easier tow.

I should have bought a dually with 4.10s. I thought a SRW with 3.73 would get better mileage, but mine can't compete with these numbers. I just tow a little boat and get about 11 mpg. No matter what I do I can't get into the mid 19's. I've had the truck 2 years and got mid 18's once and every other calculated tank as been about 14-15. Maybe I can just swap out my rear end to a dually with 4.10's. I'd definitely get the dually.

I just bought a new 05 CC LB FX4 6.0 DRW with 4.30's as part of the tow boss package. The RMPS are a little high at 70mph compared to my 03 CC SB FX4 6.0 SRW with 3.73's. I only have 600 miles on it and I haven't towed yet (installing the 5er on Sunday) but I suspect that I should have got the 4.10's. Just my thoughts about the 4.30's.

Mileage should not be a consideration when you are figuring on a tow vehicle, Safety should.

If the 5th wheel is of any size/weight you should have a DRW. It is much more stable.

If you are near the top end of the weight rating on your SRW, I would also look at a DRW.
