Back Again...

Good Morning List,

I posted "No Fire in the Hole" about a month ago and NOW I am getting around to doing something. Long story short...truck won't start (yes, it cranks over as other people have asked). Had the ignition module tested as well as the coil, both are good. Someone told me to check the voltage at the + side of the coil...11.30 volts. This leads me to ask, Is my battery strong enough to crank it, BUT not strong enough to fire it off? (I am charging the battery as I write this)

I pulled the distributor last night so I can replace the magnetic pick-up. An employee at Napa told me that while cranking the truck, the negative side of the coil (?) should fluctuate with a test light. I don't remember this happening which tells me that the dizzy is not telling the coil to fire...right?!?!?

Thanks for any help that you all can give me!!!

Have you checked a spark plug to see if you're getting spark to it? If not do this first. Pull a spark plug or better yet if you have a spare plug in the garage use it. Pull any one of the spark plug wires, put it on the plug and ground the strap on the plug and then crank (better yet have someone else hold it while you crank! ). Hold the little contraption by the wire end so you don't get zapped. You should see it spark as it cranks. If it DOES spark than you know the ignition system is fine and the problem is in the fuel system. If you don't get any spark then you can try to trace it down in the ignition. Let us know if you've tried this and what happened.

Yes, I tried the spark plug thing with no luck...that is why I had the coil tested (I figured it wasn't getting spark). Coil works fine on the bench test so now I'm onto the magnetic pick-up in the distributor. Hope this works, cuz after this one I'll be lost again!!!

Pull and check for power on the electical harness plug to the ignition module. Do you should have positive power to the electrical harness?

Take the distributor cap off and have someone crank the engine. Make sure the rotor is turning. Sometimes the roll pin holding the distributor gear can shear and the dizzy stops turning.

Hi Guys...The dizzy is turning!!! I replaced the magnetic pick-up today & that didn't work...still no start. I do have the OE distributor with the exception of the large cap conversion. I have a "Jacobs" Ultra Coil & a NAPA ignition module. Napa bench tested the module, but now I am having second guesses - could it still be the module??? I even put in a new ignition switch on the dash. Fuel is not an issue in this case...my clear fuel filters are filling up, I can watch the fuel shoot down the carb throat & I actually flooded it a few times (take out the plugs, clean them, stick them back in, repeat).

Thanks 75ford...I will now check for power to the ignition module and let you all know how progress is coming. Thanks again for the help!!!
