Cool Trans

I have a 2001 superduty 4x4 with the 7.3 and auto trans.
When I'm driving it and go to pass or just stomp on it. its like it shift into
first gear the RPMs go up real high but it don't go fast but I can let off
the gas and ease back into the gas and it will shift and then it speeds up.

You didn't mention the milage so I'll assume it's over 100K. The first thing I would do is change the oil and filter. Just my 2 cents.

While on vacation my truck was fine till I got fuel then when I got back on the hwy it would shift up but 3k RPM's at 50 MPH. The only place I could find that would do the filter and fluid work was Jiffy Lube. It was $134 for them to pull the pan and change the filter, flush the system and put it back together (with me watching like a hawk). It did not improve anything

My thoughts are take it to a trany shop and have them dig into it but be prepared for a $3K+ bill. It could be as simple as the filter and you can do it yourself but by taking it to a trany shop if it's more they will catch it instead of you being out the $45 for the filter and $25 for the 17 quarts of fluid.

Just for reference my 02 CC SRW has 76k on it and the trany went 11 days ago now :-(

Are the auto-trannys that weak in our trucks? Is it just the E40D ( I think thats right )? What year models have the E40D? When ( if ) mine goes I will probably drop a manual in it, but Im hoping that doesnt happen anytime soon.

The E40D is on the pre-99 trucks, the 4R100 is on the 99 and later. They are almost the same trans.

Stock, they are the weak link, not because it is a bad design, but because the bean-counters demanded certain items in the trans needed to be made more cheaply.

If you pay someone to do a PROPER rebuild with upgraded components, it will not cost that much more than a stock rebuild - if you compare the price to what a stealership charges.

A PROPER rebuild with upgraded components turns the 4R100 into a very strong,. very reliable tranny. In fact, according to a couple of high performance parts distributors, a modified 4R100 will take a higher horsepower load than the stock 6-speed manual - although if you keep the power under 400hp, I'd guess the manual would still be more reliable.

I told one in particular that if my 4R100 died, I'd replace it with a manual. He said he'd be happy to trade me a 6-speed for a broken 4R100 - as long as it was rebuildable.

I will probably do that.
