How Do I Describe This?
93 4.0 extended Aerostar - 155k miles. In drive at 0 mph, there's a nasty click-click, clackety-clack from the engine (?) - well from in front/below the steering column anyway. Shift to neutral, no noise. Back in drive,as soon as foot comes off the brake and van starts to move, the noise goes away. There is still the clackety-clack on acceleration, and not so bad with the A/C off. About 10k miles ago I did the whole decarbon process as described elsewhere in the forum. Didn't make much of a difference. My family all says this Aero makes lots of strange noises.
I know this is tough diagnosing from afar, but any ideas?

From what you describe, I would venture a guess at a broken motor mount that allows the fan to contact the shroud during engine loading - i.e. idling in gear with brake on and during acceleration. Should be able to look at the fan blades and/or shroud for evidence of recent contact. (With the engine off)
To other posters: Have we ever had a broken motor mount reported? I can't recall one - at least not in recent memory.
