I have heard rumors here and there about some modification to the fill tube or something on the Excursions...
I have not looked into it any further really, but have always had it in the back of my mind and for some reason, my X will only take about 35 gallons before it's clicking off...
Is there any truth to any of these rumors that there is some mod that fixes this issue of clicking off way before it's actually full?
I'm pretty mechanically inclined... From what you said, sounds like the vent tube is too small to vent enough air out as the tank comes closer to being full. Pressure in the tank increases too fast fuller tank gets. A larger vent tube might do the trick or a shorter one... Am I close? Should be an easy fix for the most part... Tank really has to come down though huh?
Matt, that is the wierd part for me as well... It reads full after those 35 gallons and clicking off...
But I'm supposed to have a 44 gallon tank. Owner's Manual even says it does.
I can see the sending unit in the tank reading full even though the tank still can hold another 9-10 gallons. That would just be poor design planning on Ford's behalf.
Either way, if I can get another 10 gallons in there, it would be worth the fix.
Most likely you are not running the tank down to near empty. Have you driven until the fuel warning light comes on? On both of my X's I have 2 1/2 to 3 gallons remaining when this happens. Also, the mod is to enable you to fill the tank not only faster but put diesel in the expansion area of the tank. An X will hold nearing 50 gallons when doing so. But you do not have any expansion room for the 60 degree diesel to expand into when it warms to 90 + degrees on a hot day.
Wait up a minute... you lost me after the expansion area of the tank...
Yeah, ran it till the light came on many times... Don't think that's where the problem lays. Have been meaning to throw a 5 gallon can in the back and run it till I literally run out of gas. No diesel here...
Is this mod only for the diesel's? What is the expansion area you are referring too?
Can you explain this part a bit more... "But you do not have any expansion room for the 60 degree diesel to expand into when it warms to 90 + degrees on a hot day."
I have run mine pretty far down, but still never taken on more than 35 gallons or so. I'd bet that even at empty on the guage, Ford has left several gallons in reserve. I have never had a vehicle where empty really meant empty.

Fuel is normally stored underground and in most parts of the US that fuel temp is arround 55 degrees. When fuel heats up it expands and EPA requires OEMs to have room in the tank to accomodate this without spilling gas (diesel) on the ground. Generally, the OEMs set aside about 10 pecent of tanks capacity for the expansion. So all Xs have a 44 gallon tank plus about 10 percent 4.4 gallons for expansion totalling 49 - 50 gallon depending on the specific tank. The F-250 guys do the harpoon thing so they can fill faster and hold more fuel.
