need some info PLEASE!

is it bad for a diesel to leave her idling instead of shutting her off? Ive heard if you shut her off and turn it on frequently it does the trucks bad. I'm new to diesels. I have a 1993 Ford F-350 7.3L Turbo Diesel, crewcab with 144,000 miles. Also ive seen other diesel trucks that let out alot of black smoke on takeoff, i want to do that, is that something i have to mess with or what is the deal with that. It might be a stupid question but i thought i would ask. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

dude, black smoke is wasted fuel. I dont think its any cheaper down there. Idling is also expensive to do, unless you are running into many homes or businesses at one stop or close together.
enjoy the ride and dont waste fuel.

ok if you are going to let it idle for 10 minutes its ok 1/2 hour shut it off unless its winter then I'd let it idle up to a 1/2 hour. You don't want to shut it on and off because the pistons expand and contract along with the heat. so if they are hot you get more compression (better fuel mileage) and more power. if its cold the reverse and you shouldn't work it to hard like this. always give it time to warm up and cool down. if you let it idle all the time you can coat the cylinders with fuel which isn't very good ethier. if you got a high idle switch you can let it idle longer.
