short in wire....speedometer problem

95 F150 I6 2wd M5OD

A few weeks ago I began having a problem w/my speedometer jumping around. Whenever the needle would jump around the truck would also buck. Another interesting observation is that, even in neutral, if the truck began to coast at low speeds the truck would stall, even moving from a dead stop on a hill. Because it was in neutral I knew the problem had to be electrical.

I unplugged the ABS sensor, where the truck gets the speedometer reading and that fixed the bucking and stalling, but now I have no speedometer and naturally my odometer reading doesn't move. After running diagnostics on it I narrowed it down to a short in a wire, I'm assuming one of the wires that runs from the ABS sensor to the ignition control modual. I now have three questions.

1. Has anybody ever experienced a problem like this?

2. How do you test the wire to find which one is bad?

3. Where can I located the correct color coded replacement wires so that I can use the manual for future repairs.

Other than this problem the truck runs perfectly.

How did you arrive at the conclusion it's a wiring problem? Did you replace the sensor and it still didn't work? Some people have had problems with the rearend, and the sensor would not pick up the gear teeth properly(I am assuming your speed sensor is mounted in the rearend housing).

Here's a picture
http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/g...3d800a3a53.gif

That shows the speed sensor wires to be grey/black and pink/orange.

ahh sorry.....I forgot to mention I replaced the ABS sensor and cleaned out the rear end to check for missing teeth and whatnot. Thanks for the reply though. Any other ideas?

One thing you can do to double check your on the right track is to try to pull codes from the computer. You should get a vehicle speed sensor error. Your check engine light should be on if it has a code.

I was reading in my fuel injection book, and you can also jack the rear of the truck up and put it on jack stands, start it up and put it in gear and let it idle with the wheels slowly turning. The book said you should get at least 0.5v ac or more from the sensor.

If you think it's the wiring, more than likely it's going to be along the frame underneath where it can get caught and damaged. I wonder if you can find the problem by just visually checking the harness for damage.

There is no check engine light on. When I ran the diagnostics it said there was s short somewhere. I replaced the sensor and it didn't help. I visually checked the wires and found nothing. Does anybody know how to test the wires and replace sections od wire?

Well, the only way I know how is to write down the color wires at the sensor, and then look for the same color wires going into the abs unit and the speedo. Once you find the same color wire at the far end, put a ohmmeter on one end of the wire, and the negative of the ohmmeter to the frame. Take the same color wire at the sensor and ground it to the frame. If it's good, you will get continuity.
