Which fuel pump is best?

I need to change a mechanical fuel pump on a 400 engine and I wondered if anybody has a certain brand of pump they thought was good or rotten. The local parts store has a pump for$20, but that is what I paid for the last one nearly a year ago. I don't want to be changing fuel pumps every year so I want to get a good one. Thanks!

Unless you order by mail, you may be limited by what your parts store carries. I've had good luck with Carter fuel pumps.

I run a Carter electric pump, too. Had one on a 454 C*vy, too -- worked fine. A little on the "noisy" side, though....

Which fuel pump is best?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Nov-02 AT 09:37 PM (EST)]look at both the Carter and holley electric pumps......Ideally , you never want your pressure to exceed about 7 psi for a carbourator , so a gauge inline would be in order in my opinion.....Electrics are alittle on the noisy side but they really put out the volume when mounted below and as close too the tank as possible......The only way an electric has to Cool itself is by circulation of the fuel itself!!!!!So when i installed a Holley on my frame rail I ran it up to a pressure valve then too a gauge then to the carb----------I installed a "T" just before the pressure valve and ran a return line back to the tank inside the cab of my 77 hiboy-----I had to drill a 5/16's hole in the fuel sending unit and run a brass fuel fitting Thru the unit and allow the fuel to be pumped straight down into the tank.....You have to be careful when you drill the whole as the you don't want to impair the "Pendulum" movement of the swing arm with the little brass "Bobber" on the end of the swing arm----Needless to say I'm quite happy with the way it worked out----Electric's are the best in my opinion!!!!!fd

Thanks for the info, I have thought about going with the electric pump, but had never heard from anyone who had used one. For now, I am going to put the no-name pump from Checker on and start planning for a conversion to an electric pump in the near future.
