for no apperent reason all of the sudden my bronco will not engage into 4x4 high on the fly. I can hear a slight gear to gear grinding sound and as I slow down and almost get to a stop then it will clunk into 4x4. What could this be? Anyone experiance this? Does a tranfer case have a sychronizer in it?
1975ford I have done a search on this problem and it seems that for everyone else it seem to cause their truck to become disabled. Like they cannot go forward until they go in reverse and adventualy they cant move any more.
Mine has no efect to my normal 2wd, will this change or will it only efect my 4x4?
and yes it sounds like a grinding noise going as fast as my tires spin. As I slow down the grinding noise gets slower and slower until just when I stop it will clunk into 4x4. If I stop and put it in 4x4H it goes right in no problem. The reason I know is because when I start driving I can here all the front shafts spining and when I push the shifter up out of 4x4 the spining shafts stop.
It might be that the plastic clips at the end of the shifter fork in the transfer case is broken or worn out.
It could be the shifter is not moving far enough to engage the transfer case.
Does the truck have a body lift?
Are the tire size the same size?

Yes! I have a 4" lift and the tires are 33X12.5 You say this plastic clips are in the transfer case. Is hard to check it out of fix?
From your description, the problem seem to be isolated to the 1456 transfer case. I've torn into a few transfer cases and the model on your bronco is fairly easy to repair.

That is good news, since I can still drive it, both in 2wd and 4wd, should I just keep driving it until it goes out? How much will a rebuild kit cost for it? Or would you suggest I pick one up at a junk yard and rebuild it and have it ready for when it does die?

I am currently having somewhat of the same problem as you except my transfer case gets stuck in 4x4 occasionally. I plan to pull it and attempt a rebuild shortly on mine.
