Question fuel gage stuff

The fuel gage doesn't work but all the rest do on my '38 1/2 ton. The dealer I bought it from said the previous owner was trying to fix it, new sender at least. What steps should I take to track down the problem? Tks~JH

The sender should send a resisted current to the gauge. If the sender is new, I'd find the ohm reading at the sender with the lever at the full and empty positions, and then test the resistance at the gauge in the same positions to see if they are the same. Also check the power wire on the gauge to make sure that that is not creating any extra resistance and has the correct voltage (somewhere around 6v). If the wires check out right at the gauge and the gauge still doesn't work then you might want to find a new gauge. Knowing the correct ohms would be helpful but alas, I don't , but I'll try and find them. There is a method to test the guage without the sender, but I can't remeber it. Maybe someone else here does. Well, that's all I can tell you for now. Good luck!
