Timing Troubles

hey, i got a 79 ford ranger 2wd wih the 302v8 and i got a question.
ive been gone about a week and i dunno if its something to do with that but i was just out cruisin stopped to turn and it died about 10 feet further from the curb i managed to eventually start it again and limp home (obsolutly no acceleration power whatsoever) it wouldnt rev quickly at all in neutral. so we got the timing gun out and checked some things and the timing ended up bein an easy 10 degrees off but the distributor was still firmly in place. we fixed it and made sure the distributor was tight. i was thinking its prolly the timing chain skipped a tooth or something my father who was with me when we fixed it didnt think that it would have been able to get back into time if the chain skipped. any thoughts on the subject wether it is the chain or something else? thanks

High mileage on this engine ?

If so, do the test for checking for stripped timing gears.

check the timing advance in the distributor maybe the vacum advance struck or maybe the mechanical advance stuck

I've had it happen twice that I know of. First time it skipped and kept running, 'till I parked the car. The backlash finnished off the plastic timing gear. Second time, with a friends car was about the same, it ran longer. He asked me what I did, it ran better. One morning it wouldn't start.

Sometimes the stars (and the valvetrain) do align. I think it's the exception, not the rule.

JMHO, Mike

You should check the roll pin in the dizzy shaft to see if it sheared. Seriously!
