I have a 1941 Ford P/U. Ive started the restoration process already. I have powder coated the frame, added ford 9 inch rear, mustang II front end, man. rack & pinion, and 4 wheel disc brakes. Now Im ready for the engine. Does anyone know / recomend me to someone who rebuilds these things. Im trying to find someone who really knows these thing. I live in VA. Ive found someone in GA. but was just wandering if anyone has any info. My intentions are to go Hot Rod with it. Double Dueces(97's) and intake I have already. Also need trans rebuild help.
Don't know much about your area, but many engine shops will tell you about a place that specializes in flathead in the area if not they do not and then finding someone running a flathead living in your area may be able to tell you where you can look. Sounds like a nice project there.
The flathead transmissions don't seem that hard to rebuild. Just pull 'em apart and look for worn/cracked pieces, replace the bearings and gaskets. It's reccomended that the gears are magnafuxed for cracks as they will kill the tranny. If I remember right, the reverse/4rth (on 4 speeds) need a press to get out if they need to be replaced other than that everything but the bearings should come out with a little playing around, those requiring a press or gear puller to remove. Have you consided a t-5? They seem to be a good swap considering that some say that the origional trannys are a ticking time bomb and the swap also gives you a few more gears.
honestly it is very much a case of learn as you go i got an 255 merc with one of my trucks which i pulled down - they are similar as normal motors - a few tricks i learnt along the way - mostly the ones to unstick the valves - but it is just an engine - somewhere on the net - i'd hav to look for it again is an engine manual for rebuilding the old flatty anyway best of luck
The biggest problem with these engines is removing the valves.
The valley gets filled with carbon and old oil.
The valve and guide are removed together.
