No deposit here in Washington state so I toss them to the recycle bin. But lately the hobo/bum type dirtbags have been seen taking them early in the morning. Most of them are from Oregon judging by the plates, they get .05 cents each for them on the other side of the river. I just read last week that it is a crime to take cans from the recycling bins.

Scavenging: It's against the law
Scavenging of recyclables is against the law! If you see a theft in progress please call 9-1-1 and report it as a "theft in progress". Do not confront the suspects! Law enforcement considers scavenging a gateway crime to other activities (eg. drugs, indentity theft, etc.). In addition, the City of Vancouver Solid Waste Services keeps track of recycling thefts, so after calling 9-1-1, or if the suspects have come and gone, or you didn't see it but notice stuff missing, or e-mail Solid Waste Services to report the incident. Contact information is available at left.
I didn't know Wahingtons cans would work in our machines here. I just got back from Mt. St. Helens and I didn't even think about it. Might have paid for the gas...
I wouldn't doubt scavenging is against the law. Recycling programs are big money. What other business is there where people pay you to take the raw material you need to sell? Other than farming and Intel, I can't think of any that work quite that way.
Crush cans. Save cans. Recycle cans. Buy more beer with money from those cans. Drink more from cans. Crush cans. Save cans. Recycle cans. I think you see where this is going.
