When I bought my truck, there was diamond plate welded over the bed floor to cover the holes. This would've looked real nice had it not have been painted. On the drivers side, exactly where the filler cap goes, there's a dent. Now, in my restoration, should I just replace the bed or are there other options

Good luck finding a short bed in good shape, they are a hot item. I would try putting in a bed liner. Mine cost 150$, and covered the dents just fine. I would get the style that tucks under the side wall bed lip, as opposed to the ones that fold over the top of the side. They tend to warp, then you got a million screws in it to keep it flat.
You could always rebuild the bed or keep your eyes open for a good used one. Don't pass up calling on any you might see advertised, saw one a couple of weeks ago my parts guy bought for $200 bucks. The thing was beautiful!!! Could have sold easily for $700 all because the kid wanted a flat bed.....
